Woodland Management
In 2009/2010 the founder undertook a 6 month Woodland Management Course at CoppiceWood in Cilgerran, Pembrokeshire. This involved learning the traditional methods of woodland management, hedgelaying and green woodworking skills. We can manage your woodland in a number of ways to give the most biodiverse habitat for indigenous species and to increase the quality of timber produced.
Coppice Rotation
The most traditional and often the best for wildlife and timber quality in our native broadleaved woodlands in west Wales is the coppice rotation method. Here trees such as hazel, willow, ash or chestnut are cut on rotation every 10, 15, 20 or so years according to what the timber will be used for in the end. The whole woodland would be split up into coupes and each one worked in rotation.
Coppice Restoration
Since the end of World War II a lot of woodland has been neglected and unmanaged. This ends up looking pretty with moss and lots of dead wood which in itself makes good habitat for many species, but being not very productive in the timber it yields. We can draw up a woodland management plan and make your neglected woodland productive again.
Hedgelaying
We can manage overgrown hedgerows to make functional boundaries by doing something called hedgelaying. This involves cutting the hedge species of trees about half way through and folding over. We use wooden stakes to hold the hedge in place to maintain shape and stock proof ability.
Thinning
We can thin a woodland to your demands taking out the smaller trees to allow more room for the larger timber trees.
Clear Felling
We can arrange a felling licence to clear fell a piece of woodland and arrange re-planting of the land which is a legal responsibility if you are to clear fell.
